UCAR Visiting Scientist Program

Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA)

Camp Springs, Maryland

The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) Visiting Scientist Programs (VSP), in cooperation with the Air Force Weather Agency (AFWA), seeks visiting scientists who are interested in conducting research at the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA).

numerical weather prediction (NWP) advanced satellite data assimilation

Applications are being sought for research scientists who would like to work on numerical weather prediction (NWP) advanced satellite data assimilation technique improvements and transitioning these improvements into the operationalcommunity-supported weather models run at the AFWA. The goals and expected accomplishments are:

  • aid the development of advancing multi-dimensional and/or ensemble-based assimilation techniques;
  • develop advanced methods to better analyze and predict clouds and cloud properties using advanced assimilation and NWP technologies; and
  • aid the transition of those new capabilities to operational production.

All goals and accomplishments are geared toward increasing AFWA’s ability to support the broader warfighter mission and to provide a unique training and research opportunity for the UCAR Visiting Scientists. This is done via leveraging technology and expanding on research in close collaboration with the JCSDA and NCAR along with other academic, government labs, and industry sources when possible. This work requires a PhD in Atmospheric Science, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related discipline with an emphasis in environmental data assimilation methods, and at least three years of experience in researching and applying these methods is preferred.

satellite-based land data assimilation technique

Applications are also being sought for research on satellite-based land data assimilation technique improvements and transition into operational weather models run at AFWA. This is done via leveraging technology and expanding on research anddevelopment efforts of JCSDA and its partner agencies, NCAR, and academicsources.  This position requires an advanced degree (PhD preferred) in AtmosphericScience, Hydrology, or a closely related discipline with an emphasis in environmental data assimilation, land surface or similar mathematical modeling, and at least three years of experience in this field is preferred.

Strong candidates should have:

  • Advanced organizational, prioritization, and collaboration skills.
  • Independent problem-solving and reasoning skills.
  • Ability to work both cooperatively and independently.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Competence with Microsoft Office utilities (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel) and basic computer skills.
  • Advanced capabilities in mathematical computation or modeling (numerical weather prediction techniques and mathematical modeling methods)
  • Reliable and timely work ethic; ability to maintain a schedule, meet deadlines, and participate in future schedule planning

These will be one-year appointments with the possibility of renewal up to a maximum of three years. The selected candidate will receive a fixed annual salary commensurate with experience. Benefits include health and dental insurance, personal time off, paid holidays, mandatory participation in a retirement fund (TIAA/CREF), and life insurance.

Applications will be reviewed on receipt and the position will remain open until filled.

To apply, send the following materials to the UCAR Visiting Scientist Programs:

  1. Cover letter identifying this program.
  2. Curriculum vitae with a list of publications in refereed journals.
  3. Names and addresses of three references. It is the applicant’s responsibility to contact the references and request that they submit letters in support of your application to VSP.
  4. PhD or Master’s thesis abstract for recent degree recipients.
  5. One to two page statement of experience and interests as related specifically to Position 1 or Position 2.
