UCAR Research Opportunity

NOAA Tropical Prediction Center / National Hurricane Center, Miami, Florida

A research meteorologist is being sought by UCAR Visiting Scientist Programs to work in the area of satellite retrievals of ocean surface vector winds. Several research organizations are collaborating in this exciting research effort. The selected scientist will work with forecasters located at the NOAA Tropical Prediction Center/National Hurricane Center (TPC/NHC) in Miami, Florida. See website: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/. This person will also have the opportunity to collaborate with the broader scientific community and may travel to meet with project partner organizations, including NCAR, NASA, the academic community, and other NOAA labs.

Responsibilities include:
  1. Develop and evaluate enhancements to retrieved ocean surface vector wind data.
  2. Assist in developing new quality control and interpretation guidelines for use in an operational environment.
  3. Identify strengths, weaknesses, applications, and biases of data.
  4. Evaluate options for future satellite missions.
  5. Become part of the TPC/NHC operational team and learn procedures, needs, and constraints.

PhD. or M.S. in meteorology, atmospheric science, or a related discipline is desired or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of tropical cyclones or marine meteorology desirable. Experience in scatterometer wind retrievals desired, and skill with UNIX and GEMPAK.

Salary is commensurate with the experience of the scientist and local living costs, and will be competitive with analogous university and government appointments. UCAR will assist international visitors obtain a visa.
