UCAR Visiting Scientist at NOAA Air Resources Lab

Silver Spring, Maryland

This position will remain open until filled. Application review will begin November 15, 2008

Visiting Scientist will conduct research at the Headquarter's Division of NOAA Air Resources Lab (ARL) in Silver Spring, MD, in the area of pollutant transport modeling, climate variability, and air-surface exchange.

The main goal of the research is to improve pollutant plume predictions through the use of mesonet meteorological data. This should include a review of dynamic data assimilation techniques for diagnostic and forecast models with the intent of eventually testing and evaluating one or more of the methods by comparing plume predictions against measured pollutant data. This is a new project for ARL and there is considerable flexibility in the design of the research plan. Collaboration with other NOAA laboratories (ESRL, NCEP) involved in the meteorological data assimilation is encouraged.

Salary is commensurate with the experience of the visiting scientist and local living costs, and will be competitive with corresponding university and government appointments. The visiting scientist is an UCAR employee and covered by all UCAR policies and benefits. Excellent benefits include health and dental insurance, paid time off, paid holidays, mandatory participation in the TIAA/CREF retirement fund, and life insurance. UCAR will assist international visitors in obtaining a visa.
