Postdocs Applying Climate Expertise Fellowship Program
2011 Call for Applications
“Keeping pace with a changing climate”
The UCAR Visiting Scientist Programs (VSP) in collaboration with the NOAA Climate Program Office, announces the 2011 call for applications to the PACE (Postdocs Applying Climate Expertise) Fellowship Program. The program has been developed to:
- Grow the pool of scientists qualified to work at the interface between climate science and its applications;
- Transition advances in climate science and climate prediction into climate-related decision making tools and frameworks; and
- Increase and strengthen collaborations between climate esearch institutions and decision making institutions across all sectors.
The program seeks recent or anticipated PhDs who have expertise in climate science and who are interested in applying their knowledge of the climate system to increase decision-making capacity in climate-sensitive sectors. See www.vsp.ucar.edu/pace/ for more information.
First Round applications are due 1 January 2011.
The UCAR selection committee will choose a short list of candidates from the pool of applicants by end of January 2011. Short-listed candidates will be provided information on the 2011 hosting partner institutions and will be asked to write a short proposal to complete the application process. Final Proposals due to VSP on 1 March 2011.
Scientists awarded fellowships will become UCAR employees and will receive a fixed annual salary. UCAR benefits include health and dental insurance, paid time off, paid holidays, TIAA/CREF retirement fund, and life insurance. A relocation allowance and an allowance for travel during the appointment will be provided.
How to Apply:
Step 1
You will be asked to provide the following materials for your application, in one PDF document, in the order numbered below. It may be helpful for you to complete these documents prior to using the UCAR Employment Opportunities link above.
- Cover letter that includes statement of interests and how interests relate to the PACE goals and objectives
- Curriculum vitae and list of publications
- Names and addresses of at least three professional references
- Description of PhD thesis research (and other research, if appropriate), including general areas of expertise (e.g., regional modeling, drought dynamics, extreme event estimation, etc.)
- Ph.D. or Master’s thesis title(s) and abstract(s)
Step 2
Send the following materials to the UCAR Visiting Scientist Programs at vspapply@ucar.edu:
- Applicants are responsible for contacting at least three referees to have letters sent to UCAR/VSP by the application deadline. One letter may be from your thesis advisor, but not from a potential host, and letters from more than one institution are encouraged. Referees should be directed to online reference requirements.
