ANNOUNCEMENT OF OPPORTUNITY

The UCAR Visiting Scientist Programs is pleased to announce the PACE NOAA logoFellowship Program. This program has been developed to:

  • Grow the pool of scientists qualified to work at the interface between climate science and its applications,
  • Transition advances in climate science and climate prediction into climate-related decision making tools and frameworks, and
  • Increase and strengthen collaborations between climate research institutions and decision making institutions across all sectors.


The program seeks recent or anticipated PhDs who have expertise in climate science and who are interested in applying their knowledge of the climate system to decision-making capacity in climate-sensitive sectors. Preference is given to those who have held a PhD for no more than five years.

Interested individuals should send the following materials to the UCAR Visiting Scientist Programs:

  • Statement of interest and how interests relate to the PACE goals and objectives.
  • Curriculum vitae and list of publications
  • Description of PhD thesis research (and other research, if appropriate), including general areas of expertise (e.g., regional modeling, drought dynamics, extreme event estimation, etc.)
  • PhD or Master’s thesis title(s) and abstract(s)
  • Names and addresses of at least three references. One must be from advisor.  Applicant is responsible for requesting that letters be sent directly to VSP electronically or by postal or fax.

 

Applications may be submitted in electronic form (preferably *.pdf) via email attachments sent to vspapply@ucar.edu.  

The PACE steering committee will choose a short list of candidates from the pool of applicants by 22 January 2010.  Short-listed candidates will be provided information on the hosting partner institutions and will be asked to write a short proposal as part of the second stage of the application process. Proposals will be due 1 March 2010. Fellowship awards will be announced between 15 March to 1 April.

Those receiving the fellowships will become UCAR employees and will receive a fixed annual salary.  UCAR benefits include health and dental insurance, paid time off, paid holidays, TIAA/CREF retirement fund, and life insurance.  A relocation allowance and an allowance for scientific travel during the appointment will be provided.
